Join Us for THE CARE TEAM Screening at PhilaMOCA

Ben from The Care Team

Join us on Wednesday, July 23rd at PhilaMOCA at 7:00 PM for a screening of Amistad's new short documentary about mobile crisis response in Philadelphia. THE CARE TEAM follows two mobile crisis workers as they respond to mental health emergencies across Philadelphia. Between house visits, DeShante and Ben discuss the experiences that led them to this work and reflect on the resources needed to support the communities they serve. After the screening, mental health professionals from the Philadelphia Treatment Not Trauma coalition will host a teach-in on non-police mental health crisis response in Philadelphia.

Across Philadelphia, 21% of adults have a serious mental health diagnosis. This means that at least 1 in 5 adults in Philadelphia is at risk of experiencing a mental health crisis at any moment. Police officers cannot adequately care for people experiencing a mental health crisis. In fact, they often exacerbate crises. In the last ten years, over 2,050 people in the U.S. have been killed by police during a mental health emergency, and countless more have been abused, traumatized, and forcibly committed against their will.

Mobile crisis teams consist of a licensed social worker, an EMT, and a certified peer specialist. They do not carry guns. They do not shout commands. They arrive in vehicles with no flashing lights. Where police officers exacerbate traumatic episodes, mobile crisis teams are trained to build trust and de-escalate.

We look forward to sharing more about the vital work of mobile crisis teams on July 23rd!
